St Benedict’s maintains a high priority on developing excellent literacy skills in each student. Our Literacy curriculum is linked directly to the Western Australian Curriculum and the SCASA judging standards. Which can both be found at the links below:

The Literacy program in each of the classes at St Benedict’s contains daily experiences with Reading, Writing, Viewing and Speaking and Listening.

Throughout our lower years (PP-Year 2) our teachers integrate a highly successful program called Diana Rigg. This incorporates Oral Language (speaking and listening). Motor and Movement and Decoding and Spelling.

In our middle to upper years (3-6) our teachers utilise an explicit spelling approach, using the program Words Their Way. This program is a teacher-directed, student-centred approach to vocabulary growth and spelling development whereby students engage in a variety of sound, pattern and meaning activities, sorting pictures and words. It caters for differentiated learning in the classroom, rather than a one-size fits all solution.
